Come in, hang out and have some fun! For anyone who isn’t sure what we are on about, Drop In is essentially our version of a youth club.  Drop In runs every week and is a great way of meeting new friends and finding new passions… and it is totally free! Drop In is your space. Whether you want to chill and chat with your friends, play computer games or do something more active or creative, we aim to provide a space for you to just be you. Drop In takes place in our youth hall which has everything you need.  There are comfy sofas, games, computers, pool, table tennis, air hockey, and sometimes you can even use our recording studio. Our team of youth workers are there to support you, whether you are in the mood for a quiet bit of nail painting or if you want help arranging a massive game of dodgeball! And if it hasn’t been your day, our team are also trained and equipped to talk you through any issues, questions, challenges or worries you might be facing.

We see a future in which young people are change makers, with clear confident voices that are heard above the noise. A future in which any young person from any background can grow and flourish to become their best selves. In that future they exercise both their rights and responsibilities and invest their lives in building strong communities. We walk together with young people as trusted partners who support, guide, inspire and empower them with that future in mind. We are the Mix.

What’s a Rich Text element?

This is a subheading and where it goes in the document flow

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content. In recent years, early intervention for primary aged children has been getting the attention it deserves, preventing problems occuring, or tackling them head on when they do. It also helps to grow personal strengths and skills that help prepare a child as they journey into adulthood.

At The Mix, Stowmarket, we believe wholeheartedly that early intervention is a vital part of healthy child development. We want to help children overcome difficulties ranging from anxiety, anger, low self-esteem and resilience and to instead face a future of greenlights and possibilities. That’s why we’re excited to have a team of committed volunteers, equipped with the skills they need to help one child at a time.

Why we exist: It’s never been more important to offer children early intervention. Worrying statistics show that one in six children in the UK feel unable to cope with the school day, and almost two thirds say they worry “all the time”. One in nine 5 -19 year olds struggle with an emotional disorder such as sadness, anxiety or low self-esteem. A poll commissioned in 2022 by children's mental health charity Place2Be found that 95% of UK schools had witnessed increased levels of pupil anxiety since the start of the school year in contrast to a normal autumn term before the pandemic.

What we offer: One hour a week to one child for one year.
Each of our trained Empower mentors give one hour a week for a full academic year to one child in year five or six, offering them the time and support that they need to thrive in areas such as self-esteem and emotional regulation.

Our mentors meet with pupils in their primary school, being a trusted adult in a safe space. They bring with them a range of excellent and engaging resources designed to look at each individual child's needs and target support to where it is most needed.

The results speak for themselves! Running since May 2021, Empower (formally Greenlights) have gone from strength to strength. In 2022/2023, our 23 volunteers gave nearly 900 hours of volunteering, supporting 29 children in 11 primary schools. This totals really 1700 hours of support since the programme first started.

How much does it cost? We know that money is tight for schools. Our cost to schools is just £49 per academic year per pupil, to contribute to resources.

Class Teacher

I has enjoyed her sessions with her mentor and it has been hugely beneficial for her to sit and talk through some of her worries. The major difference we saw this year was that after chatting through her worries about going on a school trip, where she was adamant that she would not go, she then reconsidered and manged to go on the class trip with everyone else, without her own parent there. This was a massive step forward for her

Pupil

I've had a fun time in my Greenlights sessions, it's helped me to be able to cope better in situations that I find stressful. For example, I used to always have to sit next to a teacher in assembly but now I don't feel I have to, and I never used to answer in class or put my hand up but now I sometimes do. We've talked a lot about me starting high school as it's something I feel very anxious about, but I feel more excited about it now

Parent

B benefits from strong relationships with people and having time with a consistent person over the course of the year has helped her no end. I feel [her mentor] has a great understanding of B and actually ‘sees’ her and not just her difficulties and this has been reassuring to know as a parent. It is just a shame she can’t carry the sessions over into High School
